1. What is a disaster?
A disaster is an unexpected adverse event of immense magnitude that causes catastrophic damage to human life as well as the natural surroundings.

2. What is disaster management?
Disaster management are measures taken up before, during and after a disaster to control the disaster and provide a framework for prompt recuperation. In fact, this progressive strategy for managing disasters is a continuous process.

3. What is an earthquake?
An earthquake is a sudden and violent movement of the Earth’s crust followed by a series of shocks of lesser intensity.

4. Analyse the distribution of earthquakes in India.
The Indian subcontinent lies in a highly volatile region. The whole of Northeast, parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and hills Uttarkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Kutch in Gujarat and Andaman and Nicobar Islands are some of the most vulnerable regions in India.

5. Analyse the effects of Earthquakes.
Primary effect involves destruction of human settlements in the form of collapsing buildings, bridges that kill and injure several people. It disrupts transport and communication system and affects the supply of electricity, water supply, etc. The aftershocks, even though of lesser intensity, can cause even greater damage by destabilising weak structures. Secondary effects include fires due to explosion of gas pipelines that can destroy forests, contamination of water supply due to bursting of water pipeline, tsunamis that flood coastal areas, landslides and spread of epidemics

9. Why does one need earthquake preparedness? 
Identifying potential hazards and advance planning can save life as well as significantly reduce destruction. Educating the public about the causes and characteristics of earthquake through training programmes can to a large extent mitigate the effect of earthquakes.

10. What was the cause of the earthquake of April 1, 2014 in Iquique Chile? 
The earthquake off the Chilean coast occurred because the Nazca plate is diving down (being subducted) below the South American plate.

11. Identify the causes of a cyclone. 
Warm sea temperature, high relative humidity and atmospheric instability contribute to formation of cyclonic winds. In a cyclone giant unstable spiral cloud bands are formed with a highly active central cloud core called ‘eye of the cloud’.

12. Analyse the distribution of cyclones in India. 
West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are the most vulnerable states on the eastern coast and on the western coast - Gujarat and Maharashtra are the two states affected by cyclone related hazards.

13. Analyse the effects of cyclone. 
Powerful winds, heavy rainfall and flooding cause huge loss of life and property. Disruption in the entire transport and communication system of the region. This becomes an obstacle in distribution of relief materials. The winds also damage water supply system which then gets contaminated by accumulated flood water. Flooding also leads to spreading of epidemics like diarrhea and malaria.

14. What is the importance of cyclone preparedness? 
A lot of lives are saved and the Indian Meteorological Department issues a warning in advance to ports, fisheries and aviation departments that help in reducing the scale of death and destruction. These days a special Disaster Warning System (DWS) is used to disseminate information about cyclonic storms in local languages, especially in isolated regions.

Geo 11- Tropical and Sub-Tropical Regions

1. Identify the location of the tropical and the sub-tropical region.
The tropical and subtropical region, extends up to 30° latitude North and South of the equator.

2.  Identify the location of the Amazon Basin.
The Amazon Basin is situated in South America. It lies between the Guiana Highlands in the North and the
Brazilian highlands in the south.

3. What is the extent of the Amazon Basin?  It is the largest river basin in the world with an area of 6100000 sq km.

4. Describe the climate of the Amazon Basin.
The Amazon Basin experiences hot and wet climatic conditions throughout the year. The daytime temperature becomes intolerable due to presence of direct sunlight and high humidity. The rainfall is of convectional type and since it occurs mostly in the afternoons, it is often referred to as the 4 o’clock rain.

5. Describe the natural vegetation Amazon Basin. 
Some plants have developed tough leaves, resins or latex outer coats that make them tough. Some plants such as ferns, orchids, cacti and mosses have evolved to the point that they live on other plants. Epiphytes are plant that grows on another plant as well as thrive in terrestrial form also.

6. Name some of the animals found in the amazing Basin. 
Animals like monkeys, tapirs, pumas, jaguars, sloths, anteaters, armadillos. Reptiles and insects such as anaconda (largest snake in the world), python, crocodiles, alligators, turtles, ants, beetles, and butterflies are found in the Amazon Basin.

7. Name the places where the Amazon Basin extends. 
It extends into Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Guyana and Surinam.

8. Write about the life of the people of the Amazon Basin. 
Various tribal groups such as Yanomani (the largest tribe in Amazon), Kanoe and Akuntsu who still sustain
themselves by hunting-gathering and fishing. Some of the tribes also practice shifting agriculture or slash and burn agriculture. Manioc, yam, beans, banana, pineapple and sweet potato are some of the crops commonly grown by the people of the region.

9. Analyse the transportation system of the cities in the Amazon Basin.
Due to presence of dense forests and swamps, it is difficult to build road and rail network in the region. Rivers are the most vital mode of transport. People use rafts, canoes and motorised boats for travelling across the region.

10.  Identify the location of the Brahmaputra Basin. 
The Ganga - Brahmaputra Basin lies in the sub-tropical zone between 10°N and 30°N latitudes.

11. Analyse the climate of the Brahmaputra Basin. 
The Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin has a monsoon type of climate which is characterised by hot and dry summers, cold winters, humid and wet monsoon.

12. Describe the vegetation which is found in the Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin.
The Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin comprise of tropical deciduous forests such as teak, sal, mahua, peepal, bamboo, etc. which shed their leaves during the dry winter season.

13. What is the primary occupation of the Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin region? 
Agriculture is the primary occupation and people practice intensive agriculture in the region.

14. In what has the flat plains facilitated development? 
The flat plains have facilitated the development of good rail, road and air network.
